Alex Dunn Racing Weekly Report (16th-22nd August)

Introduction

Gang Warfare wins spectacularly at Chepstow, under a confident ride from Rossa Ryan.

Spirits are high in the yard after Gang’s dominant performance at Chepstow, as well as good runs from Helium and Cool Macavity. At home Hannah Welch and Tom Scudamore schooled Diligent, Cry Wolf, Azari and Thahab Ifraj who all went nicely and have hurdles options for the future.

Round Up of runners

It would be easy to forget our other runners after Gang Warfare’s win, with both Helium and Cool Macavity creditable races to be third respectively, whilst at Kempton Jupiter picked up a fourth.

Gang Warfare built upon his unlucky third place at Ffos Las to win convincingly at Chepstow under a confident ride from Rossa Ryan. He made all and came back to the field halfway and was ridden away again to beat off the field one by one in a thrilling encounter, well worth a watch on the replay! This was his first win since 2016, and joined the yard last year and it has been a real team effort by all, being involved in this win.

Market Rasen was a good day for the team as both Helium and Cool Macavity finished third in their races.  Cool Macavity has had two 2nds, one 3rd, one 4th and a 7th since joining and has been a remarkably consistent runner. He was given a prominent ride, but just couldn’t quite close the gap in the closing stages. Helium on the other hand added yet another place for West Buckland and proving his still has it at the age of 13.

We sent 3 runners to Kempton over 2 days, with Jupiter finishing 4th, Enmeshing running a very respectable 6th of 12 runners whereas Argus was unable to get involved in the places but by no means has he finished with his winning ways even nearly yet.

Helium

Helium makes it a half century of runs for Alex Dunn at the nicely ripened age of 13, with his 3rd place finish. He has been a trooper of the yard and has made many special days happen for a lot of people at West Buckland. He was the yards second professional winner back in 2013 at Taunton, a year later he provided a very special day for me as he was the first of a jockey trainer double at Taunton with Come on Annie winning later on and Rhys Flint rode a hatrick of winners in 2015 to name a few. Of his 50 runs he has:

  • 5 wins
  • 6 seconds
  • 15 thirds
  • 4 fourths
  • 30 top four finishes (60%)

However as lovely as these glowing statistics are he has been known to have the occasional bite on people!

    News in racing

Thursday brought the terrible news of the impending administration of Towcester racecourse. Towcester for us is a very accessible course being around 3 hours from the yard, just next to Northampton and has seen some of our horses really thrive at this track. Indeed earlier in the year Minella Voucher recorded the first of his 2 wins there, in the last 5 years we have sent 14 runners of which 2 won and 3 were second with one fourth.

It looks likely that Betfred may be step into the void and buy the course, the track not only features a jumps track but also a grey hound one too and so there is more than 1 industry that can benefit from its renewed safety. Hopefully something can come to avail.
